Welcome

The Department of Physics at the Colorado School of Mines will host the Fall, 2009, joint meeting of the Four Corners Section of the APS and Zone 14 of the Society of Physics Students.

The meeting will take place from Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24, 2009 in the Green Center, next to Meyer Hall (Department of Physics) on the campus of CSM in Golden, Colorado. Check-in starts at noon on Friday, and the last session ends at 5pm on Saturday.

Pre-registration, abstract submission deadline: Friday, 25 September 2009

Abstract submission is now closed. We are finalizing the schedule for the talks, and if you submitted an abstract, you will receive an email with your time slot soon. We have honored all requests for oral and poster presentations.

To present a contributed talk or poster, you must submit an abstract and register for the conference.

Please note: We encourage submissions from all areas of physics. If you are submitting an oral presentation and it fits within one of our mini-symposia (see descriptions in the Technical Program area below), then you can indicate that when you submit your abstract at the APS site.

There will be prizes for the best student presentations. There are separate categories for undergrad/grad, talk/poster.

To encourage student participation, we are keeping the registration fees low.

Registration fee includes admission to technical sessions, conference program, breaks, and lunch on Saturday. Student registration automatically includes SPS sessions/activities.

Please note that the banquet talk is open to the public, but we encourage all conference participants to attend the banquet.

Student travel grants

Some support is available to assist students traveling to Golden for the conference. You must register for the meeting before applying for a travel grant.

Fill in, scan, and email the completed form to Jean-Francois Van Huele, 4CS secretary-treasurer, at vanhuele@byu.edu by Thursday, 1 October 2009. You will be notified ahead of the conference on the support you receive. Checks will be distributed at the conference in Golden.

Mini-symposia As always, submissions from all areas of physics are welcome. This year, we are highlighting research in certain areas of physics which are found at many of the Four Corners universities and national labs. If this is successful, these topics will change from year to year as the conference moves around the area.

We are highlighting these areas with mini-symposia - 2 time blocks within the parallel sessions that are organized around these topic areas:

Renewable energy (contact: Craig Taylor, CSM)

Information for Presenters

Contributed talks are APS-style format: 10 minutes + 2 minutes for questions.

Invited talks (within the parallel sessions) are 20 minutes + 4 minutes for questions.

Plenary talks are 30 minutes + 6 minutes for questions.

To save time during the conference, we encourage presenters to upload their talks in advance of the conference (you must login with the authentication code sent to your email). If you do not preload your talk before the conference, you may do it on-site up to 1 hour before your session begins.

Presenters should have already received an email with instructions on how to upload talks into the system. If you did not receive this message you should contact Charles Durfee for your authentication code. Presenters may upload presentations in one of the following formats:

  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint (*.ppt)
  • OpenDocument Presentation (*.odp)
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader format (*.pdf)

Additional documents (such as movies) should be uploaded together with the presentation in a compressed folder (*.zip, *.tar.bz2, *.tar.gz). At check-in presenters will be asked to test their presentation on the same hardware that will be provided for the talks.

The poster session is Friday evening, 5pm - 6:30pm. Mounting boards and pushpins will be provided.

Maximum poster width: 48 inches

To present a contributed talk or poster, you must submit an abstract and register for the conference.

Late registration is an extra $15.

To park on campus, you will need a parking pass. If you indicate on your registration that you need a parking pass, we will email a printable pass to you.

Exhibitors

We are pleased to have exhibitors join our meeting! As an exhibitor you will have the opportunity to meet with many of our finest students from the Four Corners Area (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah). Please contact the organizers in order to reserve your table today. Space is limited and is first-come first serve. The Exhibitor registration deadline is October 19, 2009.
